Home is the place where you go to really let your hair down. The first thing that you do as soon as you get home might be to kick your shoes off. It doesn't matter whether you are returning home from work, a social event or school.

Your home should be a place that you associate with relaxation. Home should be a place that you associate with acceptance and peace. Once you get home, you don't have to concern yourself with what other people think of you.

Keeping home comforts from becoming dangerous health traps

These are benefits. They can also become stumbling blocks. Associate home with the pursuit of comfort and relaxation too much and you might get home, kick off your shoes, start snacking and lounging across the sofa.

Even worse, you might head to bed early, snacking in bed while you spend hours watching one television program after another. Two to three months of this behavior could cause you to develop a habit. It could also cause your health to decline.

Avoiding health declines at home is an ongoing process. To stay fit, you can't just exercise on weekends. You also can't just workout rigorously every day for several weeks then stop. Instead, you have to create an exercise routine, one that you can stick with. Ways to do this are relatively simple. They include:

  • Consider using a fitness tracker watch.
  • Set a goal with the number of hours or miles that you are going to engage in physical exercise each day. Track your progress using your fitness tracker watch.
  • Exercise at a time of day when you feel more vibrant (morning may prove to be a good time to exercise; it may keep you from excusing yourself from exercising after you put in a full day of work).
  • Limit the amount of time that you spend watching television.
  • Use an ergonomics sit and stand computer workstation when working on projects at home, especially if you work full-time from home.
  • Find a friend or relative to go walking, running or bike riding with. Just knowing that someone is coming to your house to go for a walk, run or bike ride could motivate you to stay on track with your exercise routine.

Self-deception aids health declines at home

The path to avoiding health declines at home is not magical. If you work out of a home office, the path might include removing sugary foods and beverages from your home. It also might involve a morning stretch and weight lifting routine.

What the path to avoiding health declines at home doesn't involve is self-deception. It won't do you good to tell yourself that you're exercising enough if you really aren't. It also won't benefit you to tell yourself that it doesn't matter what you eat and drink as long as you don't gain weight.

Honesty is important when it comes to avoiding health declines at home. Consider creating a spreadsheet to track your exercise activity and your food and beverage intake. This way, you can see where you are doing well and where you could benefit from making changes.
